The Fleurieu Coast may be famous for its beaches, but just beyond the shoreline you’ll find a relaxed and surprisingly diverse food and drink scene — perfect for slow afternoons, long lunches and easy coastal days.
Within 5–40 minutes of Normanville, you can move from hillside breweries to boutique distilleries and into one of Australia’s best wine regions.
Here’s where to go.
1. Forktree Brewing (Carrickalinga)
URL: https://www.forktreebrewing.com/
Distance: 7 minutes
What to expect:
Set on a hillside overlooking the coast, Forktree is one of those places you come for a quick drink and end up staying all afternoon. The views stretch out over Carrickalinga and the surrounding farmland, making it a perfect late afternoon spot.
It’s an easy, laid-back stop — ideal for a long lunch, a tasting paddle in the sun or a relaxed drink as the day winds down.
2. Fleurieu Gin (Myponga)
URL: https://www.fleurieugin.com.au/
Distance: 20 minutes
What to expect:
A small local distillery producing handcrafted gin using native botanicals. This is a more intimate, slower-paced experience than a typical winery.
A great option when you feel like something different — easy to pair with a scenic drive around Myponga Reservoir or a cosy afternoon out.
3. Smiling Samoyed Brewery (Myponga)
URL: https://smilingsamoyed.com.au/
Distance: 20 minutes
What to expect:
Set on a working farm beside a lake, this is one of the Fleurieu’s most loved venues. Think open lawns, big skies, wood-fired pizza and a really welcoming atmosphere.
There’s plenty of space, but it’s still easy to find a quiet table overlooking the water, settle in and unwind for a few hours.
4. McLaren Vale (30–40 minutes)
If you’re up for a proper day out, McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s premier wine regions — known for bold reds, relaxed cellar doors and a very “no pretence” tasting experience.
It’s an easy drive from Normanville and perfect for turning a simple getaway into something a bit more memorable.
