Most visitors know Carrickalinga Beach.
Far fewer continue walking.
Head towards the southern end of the beach and you’ll discover a quieter side of Carrickalinga where the coastline begins to change. Walking tracks wind gently around the headlands, revealing secluded stretches of sand, rocky outcrops and uninterrupted ocean views that feel a world away from the busier parts of summer.
It’s the sort of place where conversations slow down and nobody notices how much time has passed.
Bring comfortable shoes, leave the itinerary behind and take your time. Some places aren’t meant to be hurried.
Some places tell the story of the Fleurieu better than others.
Begin with Ingalalla Falls. Towering gum trees line the walking trail, koalas sleep quietly overhead and a small waterfall waits at the end of the path. It’s peaceful, uncomplicated and one of the region’s most rewarding short walks.
Just a few minutes away sits Rose Cottage—a beautifully preserved reminder that long before Normanville became a holiday destination, this landscape was home to pioneering farming families whose stories continue to shape the district today.

Rapid Bay has long been known for its jetty, but some of its best-kept secrets are found when you’re willing to walk a little further.
Tucked beyond the familiar shoreline is a small hidden beach framed by dramatic limestone cliffs and a sea cave waiting to be explored at low tide. It’s one of those places that feels almost impossible to believe still exists—a quiet pocket of coastline where the only soundtrack is the ocean meeting the rocks.
It’s not marked with bright signs or crowded with visitors. You’ll need comfortable shoes, a sense of adventure and a little curiosity. Check the tides before you go and take your time along the coastline. The journey is every bit as rewarding as the destination.
The Fleurieu keeps some of its best places hidden in plain sight. This is one of them.
Most people stop at the jetty.
We’d suggest continuing on.
Follow the walking trail from Second Valley Jetty towards the rocky headland locals simply call “The Island”. The path winds past spectacular coastal views before revealing the remains of one of South Australia’s forgotten stories—the site of the old wharf that once played an important role in transporting local produce and limestone from the region.
Today, little remains beyond weathered ruins and remarkable views stretching across the coastline, but that’s part of its charm. There’s something special about standing in a place where history quietly reveals itself rather than announcing its arrival.
Children love scrambling across the rocks while adults inevitably stop to admire the view a little longer than they intended. It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most interesting places are found just beyond where most people turn around.
There are moments when the Fleurieu feels less like South Australia and more like somewhere tucked away in the mountains.
The walking trails surrounding Myponga Reservoir offer exactly that feeling.
Winding through towering pine forests before opening to breathtaking views across the water, it’s a place that changes with the seasons. Winter brings misty mornings and impossibly green hillsides, while warmer days invite slower walks beneath the shade of the trees.
There’s no rush here. Pack a coffee, leave your phone in your pocket and allow yourself an extra hour or two to wander. It’s difficult not to slow down when you’re surrounded by this kind of quiet.
For visitors surprised to discover forests, reservoirs and rolling hills sitting alongside pristine beaches, Myponga often becomes an unexpected holiday favourite.
The roads through Delamere are worth exploring for their scenery alone, but tucked quietly amongst the rolling hills lies another hidden piece of the Fleurieu’s story.
Silverton Mine offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s mining history—a reminder that these landscapes have been shaped by far more than farming and fishing alone. What remains today feels wonderfully understated, allowing visitors to imagine the people and industries that once called this place home.
It’s not the sort of destination you’ll find listed amongst the Fleurieu’s major attractions, and perhaps that’s exactly why we love it.

Some of our favourite places don’t have a sign at all.
Leave the main roads behind and spend an afternoon wandering through Yankalilla, Hay Flat and Delamere. Rolling farmland gives way to towering gums before suddenly opening to reveal glimpses of the coastline beyond.
Winter paints the hills brilliant shades of green while summer casts everything in warm golden light. Every season offers something different.
There isn’t a destination waiting at the end of the drive.
That’s what makes it worth taking.
The best views aren’t always the ones marked on a map.
