One of our favourite things about Normanville is that you don’t need to travel far to feel like you’ve found somewhere special.
Forktree Brewing sits just minutes from Normanville, perched high above the coastline with sweeping views across rolling farmland and out towards the ocean. It’s the kind of place that perfectly captures the Fleurieu spirit – relaxed, welcoming and effortlessly beautiful.
Arrive for a tasting paddle, stay for lunch and don’t be surprised if you find yourself lingering long into the afternoon.
This is coastal living at its finest.
Perhaps today isn’t a wine day. Fortunately, the Fleurieu has plenty of other stories to tell.
A short drive to Myponga will lead you to Fleurieu Gin, where handcrafted spirits celebrate native botanicals and local flavours. It’s a wonderfully intimate experience and pairs perfectly with a scenic drive through the surrounding countryside.
Nearby, Smiling Samoyed Brewery offers something entirely different again. Set beside a picturesque lake on a working farm, it’s become something of a Fleurieu institution. Families gather on the lawns, wood-fired pizzas emerge from the kitchen and conversations seem to stretch effortlessly across the afternoon.
The hardest part is deciding when to leave.
Less than forty minutes from Normanville lies one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions.
McLaren Vale is world-renowned for its wines, but what we love most about it is its personality. There is very little pretence here. Cellar doors are welcoming, conversations are unhurried and visitors are encouraged to slow down and enjoy the experience.
No two cellar doors feel quite the same.

d’Arenberg
Bold, playful and entirely unforgettable, d’Arenberg offers far more than a wine tasting. The iconic Cube has become one of South Australia’s most recognisable destinations and is well worth building an afternoon around.
Maxwell Wines
For something a little more indulgent, Maxwell Wines delivers beautifully. Elegant surroundings, exceptional wines and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere make it an easy place to spend a little longer than planned.
Samuel’s Gorge
There is something quietly magical about Samuel’s Gorge. Rustic, understated and impossibly scenic, it’s one of those places that feels beautifully untouched by time. Visit in the late afternoon and you’ll quickly understand why so many locals recommend it.
Bec Hardy Wines
Warm, welcoming and wonderfully relaxed, Bec Hardy is the perfect reminder that some of the best cellar doors are also the most approachable. Gather around a tasting table, discover something new and enjoy the slower pace that defines the Fleurieu.
The Flying Fox
Boutique and personal, The Flying Fox feels more like discovering a local secret than visiting a winery. Small by design, it’s the kind of place where conversations come easily and no one is watching the clock.
Coriole Vineyards
A true McLaren Vale classic. Beautiful gardens, exceptional wines and one of the region’s most celebrated restaurants make Coriole an easy favourite for long lunches and special occasions alike.
If we could offer one piece of advice for exploring the Fleurieu’s food and wine scene, it would be this – do less.
Plan for two or three stops, not six.
Leave room for unexpected discoveries. Stay longer if somewhere feels worth lingering. Cancel the plans that don’t quite fit and take the scenic route home.
The best days here are rarely the busiest ones.
If we were planning the perfect day, it might look something like this:
– A slow breakfast in Normanville.
– A scenic drive through the Fleurieu countryside.
– A leisurely tasting at a favourite cellar door.
– A long lunch overlooking vineyards or rolling hills.
– One final stop for a glass of something special.
– Returning to Normanville just in time for sunset over the coast.
Simple. Unhurried. Wonderfully uncomplicated.
There are some places that encourage you to do more. The Fleurieu invites you to do less.
Less rushing. Less planning. Less watching the clock.
More conversations that last longer than expected. More beautiful views discovered accidentally. More afternoons spent wondering whether there’s really anywhere else you’d rather be.
